Winter's here, and students thoughts turn to . . . biking By
Dusty Decker
Before you start forking out all your money to hit the slopes this season you might want to consider scrounging up 30 big ones to join Utah State University's newest club. The USU Cycling Club has finally emerged after much effort has been put into making it a great club with lots of benefits. The club includes road biking, mountain biking and cyclo-cross. The president, Tommy Murphy, and his officers have more than just a club going for them. The officers are Paul Anderson, vice president-general; Joe Clark, vice president-MTB; Amelia Henry, secretary; Mary Shepherd treasurer and Matt Jemmett, board representative. They had their first meeting Thursday and they had more than 30 people there. Over 20 people joined the club and 14 signed up to race. They encourage biking enthusiasts of all types, whether people want to join their race teams or ride for the fun of it. All students are eligible to join and so are faculty, staff and Cache Valley residents. To be a member of the club it's $30. This fee will carry you through spring and summer semesters. Next fall semester will cost $25. If you want to race, you have to buy a team uniform at cost and meet the eligibility requirements. Those who want to order jerseys have to decide by Dec. 8. Benefits of being a member include discounts at local businesses and free spinning classes at Sports Academy. Other businesses sponsoring the club include, Sunrise Cyclery and Sportsman Mountain. There goals are "to provide an opportunity for fair and safe competition for collegiate cyclists; to support a diverse group of events including road racing, track, cyclo-cross and mountain biking, and to promote an increase in the number of members of the club, the number of events promoted by the club and the level of competition." If you didn't know, cyclo-cross is a winter biking sport done in the mud, snow and whatever elements are present. It's racing with obstacles that racers have to get off their bike to get over. Currently races are taking place at Logan fair grounds every Tuesday evening through December. In the spring they will start doing at least two road bike rides a week and one mountain bike ride. So, if you've wanted to find people to start pedaling with, here is a good opportunity. The club even has a website for you to get further information. The address is www.usu.edu/cycling.
