USU water polo defeated by U of U By
Dusty Decker
On Saturday the Utah State's Water Polo Club played the University of Utah here at USU and, despite a valient effort, lost all three games. The games started at 2:25 p.m. with USU getting the tip in the first period. Justin Julander scored the first goal for USU and they got off two good shots. However, USU being a little disjointed, made bad passes and were slow on their drives. In the second period USU kicked their feet a little harder and scored two goals. The first was made by Jeff Steed; the next by Ryan Heath. Although looking a little better by the end of the second period, USU was making bad passes into the hole and still moving slow on drives. At half time the score was 3 to 6. USU only scored once in the third period and their biggest problem in that period was that the wings on offense weren't doing much. At the start of the fourth period the score was 4 to 9. The University of Utah got the tip, but USU played better defense and started playing more together. However, the final score for the first game was 5 to 12. USU's coach Scott Carl, who also plays, warned his teammates, "a lot of times we're swimming with our head down, not with it up." Despite his lecturing he added, "not bad though, that was pretty good." Both teams faced advantages and disadvantages. U of U practices on a shorter pool and they aren't as use to swimming quite that much in a game, but USU's team needs to get into better shape. U of U also had a lot of big players. USU had more players with a total of 22, five of them women. The coaches from both teams agreed to play the second game with their less experienced players. USU started out pretty good and were only down by one in the first period. The highlight of the game was when Quinton Ingles kind of barked or yelled at an opposing player who screamed and lost control of the ball. Unfortunately USU only scored two more goals in the fourth period for a final score of 4 to 13. The third game started at 3:10 with the more expirienced players returning to the pool. USU played well, but still lost 7 to 16. Teamwork is USU's biggest problem. Since a lot of players only show up to one of three practices, if that, they're having a hard time playing well together. When team members miss practice and then play in the game, they don't know the terminology and are lost when teammates are yelling "drop in the whole," or "sluff" or "drivers." As long as people will come to practice, the water polo team plans to stay up and running. The team is still on probation from last year and they don't want to lose any more privileges than they have. They play again this Saturday at U of U where there will be other schools to play with. Games start at 1:30 p.m. and go until 6.
