Cowabunga! Richmond Black and White Days coming in mid-May By
Heather Williams RICHMOND -- Black and White Days is nearing and festivities are planned for the enjoyment of all who enjoy a Holstein dairy show. Black and White Days began in 1913 to promote interest in better quality dairy cattle. The celebration used to consist of the cattle being herded into a tithing yard, and judges would ride around on horses to pick out the best of the cattle. Now, Black and White Days is a festival consisting of a number of activities. "There are whole separate events happening with the cows and horses. The following is what we handle as far as the city goes," said Councilwoman Leslie Erickson. Thursday, May 16: Richmond Relic Hall open 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Friday, May 17: Entries for the Quilt and Handwork show will be taken from 4-5 p.m. at the Historic Relief Society Building. Richmond Relic Hall open 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Melodrama, 7 p.m. Saturday, May 18: Activities, booths, food and entertainment on the Black and White fairgrounds. 7-10 a.m., chuckwagon breakfast at the community building, served by mayor and city council. Tickets purchased at the door. 7:30 a.m., registration for the Cow-a-bunga Race at Park Elementary. $1 per person entrance fee. All walkers, runners, strollers, scooters and rollerbladers are welcome. 8 a.m., Cow-a-bunga race begins. The distance is approximately two miles. 9-11 a.m., entries taken for the dairy foods contest at the Richmond LDS Stake Center. Relic Hall open. 10 a.m.-4 p.m., quilt and handwork show at the Historic Relief Society Building. 11 a.m.-5 p.m., live entertainment by "Crimson Rose" on the fairgrounds. 2:30 p.m., public invited to hear the winners announced of the dairy foods contest. 3 p.m., possible melodrama showing. 4 - 4:45 p.m., parade participants line up on south end of State Street. 5 p.m., Black and White Days parade. The parade route is State Street headed north, turning on Main Street then heading west, ending at the church. 7 p.m., possible showing of the melodrama. The Draft Horse Pulling Matches begin shortly following the parade. Tickets are $4 for adults, $2 for children. Children 5 years of age and younger receive free admission.
