More clamor than glamour for Cache's only female mayor

By Will Bettmann

Mayor Ruth Maughan, the only female mayor in Cache County, said she has never experienced discrimination on the job because of her gender. Maughan, who is in her third four-year term, said she goes to "a lot of meetings."

She said growth and development were her biggest concerns as mayor.

"My biggest question is: do we have the ordinances in place, and are we following them? We've been lucky because Jay Nielson is a great city planner for us. In fact, we're ahead of a lot of cities in the valley in terms of planning for growth," said Maughan.

She said it would be nice if more women were involved in city government, but that it didn't make a big difference to her.

"When I was elected to my first term, Providence elected a woman, but she didn't last because of poor health. There was a woman mayor in my second term, too, but now I'm the only one."

In addition to biweekly City Council meetings, Maughan meets with the Cache Mayors Association each month, serves as the chairperson of the Boundary Commission, which hears annexation disputes, and serves on the Board of Directors for the American West Heritage Foundation.

Despite the busy schedule, Maughan said she likes the responsibility of the job.

"When everything is said and done, if there's a problem in the city, it comes back to the mayor's feet," she said.
