Way Over Par with Wade: Ben Lomond flat, easy (except the par 3's) By

Editor's note: Today, staff writer and golf nut Wade Denniston begins "Way Over Par," an occasional series on the golf courses of Northern Utah. HARRISVILLE -- Slow, but relatively simple. That's what it's like to play 18 holes at the par-72 Ben Lomond Golf Course. While it took a single person four hours to play the course on Saturday, there was not much challenge to it at all. The course, which gets its name from the mountain "rising above it," is mostly flat, with very few hazards. There are hardly any bunkers, very few water holes to deal with and the par four holes are tailor-made for birdies and pars -- they're short. The first two holes you encounter when beginning on the front nine are par fours. The first of the two is a straight shot from tee box to green, and it is only 369 yards from the blue, or back, tees. Hole No. 2 (371 yards) is a dogleg left, but don't let the fact that you can hardly see the pin from the tees fool you. Keep your drive straight and you'll have a short chip to the green. After the 361-yard par-4 seventh hole, finishing the front will be a cinch as holes eight and nine are simple par fours. No. 8 is just 310 yards, while the ninth is 308, but you have to hit it over the water on this one unless you are a woman. The back nine has just three par fours, but all are relatively short. The 12th hole is 333 yards, the 13th is 330 yards, and the 14th is 346 yards. Where you may run into trouble, though, is the par threes. "The par threes?" you're asking yourself right now. That's right, simply because three of them are relatively long. For example, hole No. 3 is a whopping 231 yards. The 10th hole is 209 yards and the fifth is 174 yards. But, the other two par threes are much shorter, giving you an opportunity to make up some strokes (if you need to). Hole No. 15 is a simple 134 yards, with a few bunkers that could come into play. Hole No. 17 is 154 yards, but water is a hazard. If you are willing to venture about 50 miles south (from Cache Valley) to play Ben Lomond, have patience in your play, especially on Saturday. The play is very slow with not many other golfers willing to let faster players play through. Try to make your tee time early in the morning (probably around 7 or 8), which should help you beat the rush to the course, as well as beat the heat. Tee times can be made by calling 801-782-7754.
