It's do, and do again, or die Tuesday for Logan High softball By

If the Logan High softball team wants to win its first-ever state championship, it will have to do it the hard way. After Logan's 8-0 loss to Springville in the second round of the 4A state tournament Thursday afternoon, the Grizzlies were bumped to the elimination bracket of the tourney. "We were whooped," said first-year Logan head coach Mark Dewey of the disappointing loss to the Red Devils. The Grizzlies (14-9 overall) don't have any room for fault. Now, one more loss and it will be an early summer. With a possibility of two games on Tuesday, Logan's first test will be against Olympus, which got by Bonneville, 5-1, Friday afternoon. And to be facing the Titans, the Grizzlies couldn't be happier, despite having lost to them 4-1 in their first game of the season, at the St. George Tournament. "We want to redeem ourselves," Dewey said. In the two teams' first meeting, Olympus scored three runs in one inning on four throwing errors. On top of that, Logan threw its second pitcher at the Titans, sophomore Nichole Romrell. But this time around, Grizzly ace Randi Carver will look to get Logan back on the right track. "We need Randi to go all out," Dewey said. Yes, the Grizzlies do, especially after the senior's last time out against Springville. In that game, Carver threw two wild pitches, while batterymate Romrell allowed three passed balls. Besides that, the Logan defense committed five errors in the game. "Springville's the only game I've ever seen (Carver) lose," Dewey said. Prior to that game, the right-handed hurler has kept the Grizzlies in every game she's pitched in. As of Logan's last regular season game against Fremont on May 4, Carver had thrown 143 innings, walked just 18 batters, and had an earned run average of only 1.17. She has pitched in all but two games this year, compiling a 14-7 record. Besides that, Carver does it from the plate, as well. As the third batter in the lineup, she has a .463 batting average. "Randi's everything on this team," Dewey said. Dewey says Carver will be back to true form against the Titans. "I really believe that Randi will pitch good again," he said, "but we've got to hit the ball. That's the key." The game will begin at 3:15 at the Cottonwood Complex (field two) in Salt Lake City. If Logan wins, it will play again at 7:45 on field three against the winner of Box Elder and Payson.
