Aggies end softball season with loss to Northridge By

The Utah State University softball team ended its season with a 6-4 loss to California State University, Northridge on Saturday at Johnson Field in Logan. Despite the setback, though, the Aggies finished the season at 19-38 (6-18 in Big West Conference play), which is the most wins for a USU team in the last three seasons. However, the Aggies had a final win in their grasp until they let it slip away in the top of the fifth inning. Going into the fifth with a 4-3 lead, Utah State let Cal State, Northridge (26-24-1, 16-8) take the lead for good by giving up three runs. It was the second time in the game the Matadors plated three in an inning. The Matadors began the contest's scoring with three runs in the top of the first off Aggie starting pitcher Kristen Hommel, who was relieved in the second inning by Kelly Warner, who took the loss. But, USU came back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first. Senior first baseman Sandy Taylor plated the first run for the Aggies with a triple. Then, a single by catcher Breanne Nickle scored Taylor. Utah State took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the second with two more runs. A leadoff walk to Christina Conrad set the table for Aimee Johnson's first career home run. The Matadors recorded 14 hits off four Aggie pitchers, while USU smacked seven hits. Johnson, a freshman, was the hottest of the Aggies with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
