Three Aggie basketball players leave to seek less bench time 250-pound power forward signs on for next season By
Wade Denniston
It looks as if Aggie basketball fans will have to get to know at least four new faces next season. At first, it appeared as if Utah State University would lose just one player, senior Troy Rolle, off the most successful Aggie team in history (28-6 overall, 19-0 in Big West Conference). However, USU head coach Stew Morrill announced last week that Brad Willden, Andre Mahorn and Rashaun Thomas would leave the school in pursuit of more playing time elsewhere. Willden is the only ex-Aggie, thus far, to have signed with another school as he will play next season at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. But, Utah State has filled the void of one of the losses by inking Jeremy Vague (also last week), who will be in camp for the 2000-01 campaign. Vague, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound power forward, will have two years of eligibility left at USU after finishing his sophomore season at Canada College, in Redwood City, Calif. In that season, Vague averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds a game, while being named to the All-Coast Conference second team. The upcoming junior shot 53 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free-throw line. "Jeremy gives us some additional inside presence with his size, strength and skill," Morrill said. "We are excited about the potential Jeremy has to become a good Division I player. "If he dedicates himself to the game, he will be a big contributor for the next two years." Prior to playing at Canada College, Vague spent one season at Pepperdine University, where he appeared in just four games. A native of San Diego, Calif., Vague was a two-time Most Valuable Player at San Marcos High School. There, he averaged 23 points and 17 boards a game as a senior. On top of that, Vague still holds the school record for blocked shots and is the second leading all-time scorer in the school's history. However, Vague's not the only player out of Canada College to sign with the Aggies this season. John Niel signed with Utah State during the early signing period. Niel was an All-Coast Conference First Team selection this past campaign, and will join the Aggies during the 2002-03 season after serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
