Sheriff's Office secretary has (most of) the answers

By Analisa Coats

Cache County Sheriff's Office secretary Marcy Mouritsen has dealt with a few strange requests over the past seven years.

She once had a caller who wanted to excavate a gravesite.

"They wanted to know if they could dig their father up out of the cemetery," Mouritsen said. She told them they were asking the wrong person.

Despite the occasional odd encounter, working with people is Mouritsen's favorite part of her job -- and it is something she does well, as Sheriff Lynn Nelson will attest.

"Marcy plays a pretty vital role," said Nelson. "She deals well with the public."

Dealing with the public is something that Mouritsen gets a lot of practice at. A normal day at the sherrif's office consists of handling walk- in traffic and running off reports as well as answering phone calls, which Mouritsen estimates to total between 50 and 75 per day.

Mouritsen also keeps track of expenditures.

"She keeps me up to date on all our budget," Nelson said.

In addition, Mouristen screens disgruntled people who come into the Sheriff's Office-the part of her job she doesn't like. She said that as secretary, she is often the first person confronted when someone has a problem, even though she isn't responsible.

"I get it," she said. "It's nothing to do with me."

Has much changed at the Cache County Sheriff's Office while Mouritsen has been employed? She said it seems like there are more people coming in with problems.

"More people means more work," she said.

However, increased work has not been a problem for Mouritsen.

"She has been an extremely dedicated employee," Sheriff Nelson said. "She hits the ground running."
