Millville will expand city offices into museum space

By Joseph Sheppard

March 25, 2005 | MILLVILLE -- The Planning Commission gave zoning clearance Thursday for one new home and an expansion to the city offices.

Best Choice Professionals was given clearance to build a speculation home in The Shire subdivision at 550 N. 140 East.

Planning Commission Chairman Jim Hart told William Hawkes, the builder, that the landscaping must be in within two years and that the grassy knoll in front of the home needed to be maintained.

The city office will have a 10-foot-by-14-foot, one-room expansion into the city museum, Councilman Mike Jessop said. The museum has enough room for the expansion and all the items in the museum can be rearranged and still fit in the museum, he said.

Receiving clearance from the commission for the remodeling wasn't necessary by city ordinance but it would helpful for insurance purposes, Jessop said.

The commission discussed the possibility of requiring builders to follow new standards passed after building clearance is received from the commission, if more than one year passes between when the commission approves building plans and when they are presented to the city council for approval.

Mayor Mike Johnson suggested that the commission find out what sort of ordinances other cities had to help in making a decision.

Hart said he was also concerned that the commission had given approval on building plans that still needed approval from the city engineer. He said there were so many changes that needed to be made before the city council approval could be received that perhaps the commission shouldn't have approved them.

Johnson said he thought the council had done well in approving the building plans, but that he would like more complete work from the developers.
