Hyrum OK's permit for pawn shop

By Emma Tippetts

March 12, 2005 | HYRUM -- A new pawn shop is scheduled to open for business at the beginning of April after approval by the Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday.

Todd Christensen requested plan approval for the pawn shop at 270 N. 400 West. Christensen said he and his wife are planning to run the business together, as the only two employees. Christensen said they will be involved in buying, selling and trading a variety of items including electronic games, musical instruments and sports equipment. The shop will also be involved in selling and renting shotguns, handguns and rifles.

Commissioner Jay Wardle asked Christensen about the security planned for the shop.

"Making that easy access is not a hot idea,"Wardle said.

Christensen said they are planning to have a professional company install a security system inside the building as well as possibly putting bars on the windows. He said they are planning to keep all guns for sale in locked display cases only to be opened by employees and all guns available to loan in a separate locked room in the building. He said he is in the process of obtaining a Federal Firearms License. An FFL is required in order to transfer many types of firearms both within states and between state borders.

Commission Member Stan Young said the plan meets all zoning requirement and "sounds like a win-win situation."

In other business, the commission approved a request to rezone the area between Main St. and 100 North and between 200 East and 300 East from residential to agricultural, to allow for kennel licenses.

Laurie Garner presented a petition to the commission with signatures of her neighbors who live on this block. All the residents signed the petition except two. The commission said they would agree to rezone the land to allow for kennels but a public hearing by the City Council must be held on the issue to allow for opposing views to be heard. The commission said the public would be notified when that hearing was scheduled.
