Quiet time in North Logan? Noise ordinance a possibility

By Jen Pulham

March 5, 2005 | NORTH LOGAN -- Members of the City Council met Thursday to discuss the adoption of a noise control ordinance.

North Logan currently has no noise ordinance, just common courtesy. "Don't annoy your neighbor. That's basically what we have right now," said Jeff Jorgensen, city recorder.

Without a noise ordinance, authorities cannot take any action when a complain is made over excessive noise. The need for a noise ordinance was probably spurred by an incident like this.

The ordinance will limit noise between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Some members of the council felt uneasy about the times. Councilman Mark Williams said, "Are we sure 10 o'clock isn't too early?"

Mayor Val Potter explained that the 10 o'clock time was flexible by 15 or 20 minutes.

Although a noise ordinance doesn't currently exist, guidelines for noise control are mentioned in other ordinances.

Williams said, "We've had something in our ordinances for a while but nothing with this much specificity."

The council reviewed the rough draft for the ordinance and agreed to discuss it again at the next council meeting in two weeks. At this time they will also hold a public hearing.
