Hard News Cafe named top online publication in region
March 22, 2004 | The Hard News Cafe was named best online independent student publication/Web site and two HNC reporters won three individual awards in the Region 9 Mark of Excellence competition sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists. Earl D. Scott took first, second and third place in the online sportswriting category with stories about women's hockey, USU women's basketball and joining the Western Athletic Conference. Shanna Nielsen took third place in the general news category with her story about USU President Kermit Hall's take on the JFK assassination files. She also took a second and a third place in feature writing with stories about Pilates and yoga, and an ethnography class that spent the summer in Peru. "This is a terrific recognition for USU," Hard News Cafe professor and webmaster Dr. Michael S. Sweeney said. "Our students work very hard to keep the site fresh and interesting." Recently, he said, HNC was the first media outlet to post stories on the student body election and USU's early exit from the Big West Conference basketball tournament. USU's entries competed against colleges and universities throughout Region 9, which comprises Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico and El Paso, County, Texas. Winners automatically are entered in the national competition sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
