"The First Amendment gives everyone -- including nuts -- free speech,
but free speech has a purpose: that the people may judge for themselves
and bury the nuts with indignation. We fail our founding fathers if we
let blowhards rage on talk radio, in little magazines and in nasty
books without delivering counterattacks.

River Heights renews kennel permit for Larsens

By Diana Taylor

March 17, 2004 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- The Planning and Zoning Commission approved the continuation of Mike and Aura Dee Larsen's kennel conditional use permit Tuesday night.

After three meetings the commission came to a decision last night. The review of kennel conditional use permits is conducted yearly. The commission spent several meetings discussing the permit because of citations the Larsens had received.

"The Larsens have not violated the terms of the permit," said Chairman Chris Himmel.

The commission also reviewed Norm Mecham's minor subdivision sketch plan. Mecham had intended to build this home in 1999 and had met with the commission for approval, because the buyer of the land backed out Mecham never completed the approval process.

Mecham presented the commission with the engineering that was drawn up in 1999. The commission reviewed the sketch and informed Mecham of the changes that needed to be made on the engineering, which included proper radius on the turn-around for fire department and sanitation trucks, irrigation ditches on 600 South, and checking the depth of the sewer on 600 South.

The commission will see Mecham in three weeks for a review of the changes made.

In other business the commission reviewed the animal control ordinance and the home occupational license ordinance.
