"The First Amendment gives everyone -- including nuts -- free speech,
but free speech has a purpose: that the people may judge for themselves
and bury the nuts with indignation. We fail our founding fathers if we
let blowhards rage on talk radio, in little magazines and in nasty
books without delivering counterattacks.

Millville to ask again for UDOT money to extend sidewalk

By Lynze Wardle

March 6, 2004 | MILLVILLE -- With a little luck, Millville may become a safer place for pedestrians.

The City Council unanimously agreed in Thursday's meeting to reapply to the Utah Department of Transportation for money to extend the sidewalk along Center Street from 100 North to 300 North.

"There's a big safety hazard . . . where people have to cross from one side [of the street] to the other," Councilman Brian Jensen said. "Just today I saw a bunch of cars have to slam on their breaks for pedestrians."

If the city's application is accepted, UDOT will pay for 75 percent of the repairs, and Millville will pay for the other 25 percent. Millville received money for new sidewalks two years ago, but last year's request for funding was rejected. According to Gary Larsen, an adviser on city projects, UDOT distributes its funds to areas of the state with the greatest need.

"We write letters [to UDOT], and we've had letters from the school principal. It just depends on who has the most need," Larsen said.

The council also unanimously passed a revision to a section of city code that prohibited residents from storing junk and automobile parts on their property. After concerns from citizens, the council revised the code to allow people to store automobiles and projects in their yards, as long as they are out of sight of the public.

A retreat for Millville council members was rescheduled for April 24 because of a conflict with LDS General Conference. Plans for the retreat will be finalized at the next council meeting on March 18.
