Hyrum plans annual spring cleanup in April

By Kelly Dunn

HYRUM -- It's almost that time of year again for Hyrum City to do its yearly spring cleanup.

The annual cleanup is scheduled to take place April 14-19. Councilman Larry Gittins said it will only run about a week this year, instead of normal two weeks that were scheduled in the previous years.

During the week "four dumpsters will be placed at the rodeo grounds and we will have someone monitor what goes in to make sure there will be no contraband, no tires, and batteries," said Gittins.

The council also wants to have someone monitor the dumpster area during certain times of the night. This was suggested because of last year and all the contraband that was thrown over and the extra work this caused because of the task of sorting it all out, said Gittins.

Mayor Gordon Olson said, "The cost of sorting the contraband and disposing of the tires, far outweighs the cost of having someone monitor [the area, since] they're only doing it a week."

In other business, the issue of sidewalk impact fees was brought to the attention of the council. Mark Tenhoeve, zoning administrator, said the planning commission approved two items on the proposed title on sidewalk requirements and the impact fees. First was not to delete the statement, "curbs gutters and sidewalks may be required in many subdivisions" and second, that the issue of impact fees be added to this title.

The impact fee will be determined by the city council, said Tenhoeve.

Olson suggested the planning commission should also be involved in deciding on the impact fee and where sidewalks should be put.

This was the first reading of the title, and a decision was made to move forward and authorize a study about impact fees to determine a cost.
