New youth council takes oath in Wellsville

By Jacob Moon

WELLSVILLE -- The youth have elected a new mayor.

On Monday, Feb. 18, Wellsville City held elections for the new Youth City Council. Shannon Case was elected mayor over the new council, and eight other youth were appointed to council positions.

"Unfortunately we didn't have a very good turn out for the elections," said Councilman Ron Case.

Shannon said there were only three youth who showed up to vote even though the election was open to all youth from ninth to 12th grades. Maybe it was good this way, she said, because everyone who wanted to be on the council will be able to. Other members on the council include Mindy Egbert, Cody Branch, Robin Gleason, Casey Lofthouse, Jill Stokes, Kristin Elwood, Courtney Elwood, and Cade Wyatt.

The members were sworn into office at the city council meeting Wednesday night by Don Hartle, the city manager.

Mayor Ruth Maughan expressed thanks to Case and the advisors over the new council for their hard work in getting everything organized.

"It will be an asset to the community," she said.

Maughan then told the new council members that Wellsville was one of the first communities in the valley to ever have a youth council years earlier, and that she is excited to see it started back up again.

Shannon said she is excited for the new council even though they haven't had a chance to plan anything yet.

"I'm excited because I like to do service and I know it will be fun to work with the other kids," she said.

Near the end of the council meeting, Case expressed concern that there are plenty of other youth who live just outside Wellsville City limits who would also like to be involved with the council. Case, along with the rest of the council, decided to include those youth as well to increase attendance and involvement.

"I think it would be a good idea," Case said. "These are the friends they run around with, the kids they go to school with."

The new council will meet on the second Friday of each month at 4 p.m.
