River Heights City Council prepares for spring By
Matt Stephens RIVER HEIGHTS -- Spring is in the air, short sleeves on the streets and the crack of baseball bats will be filling the silence as T-ball registration begins. "It's time to get started," said Councilwoman Mary Yancy about parks and T-ball. Yancy told the council about a new playground, 10 new trees to be planted in city parks and T-ball registration Tuesday night during the city council meeting. T-ball registration will be on April 27 from 10 a.m. to noon. The season will last from May 30 to July 2. Councilwoman Gladys Ann Atwood was concerned there are too many water meters broken. "Residents only have to pay the minimum if their meters are broken," she said. She suggested the city begin to continually replace the broken meters. Councilman Noel Cooley agreed the broken meters are a problem. He estimated there are nearly 50 broken meters throughout the city. Cooley said 23 million gallons of water are unaccounted for, resulting in an approximately a $9,000 loss for the city. Also discussed during the meeting was the emergency management team. Councilwoman Debbie Rees said the team had met many times, but they are feeling overwhelmed. The team only has four members and Rees asked the council to think about other possible candidates to bring the total number to eight.
