Paradise considers expanding town acreage by a third By
Ginger Kelley PARADISE -- A proposal to annex 101.5 acres into the town, which would be used to build 60 to 80 homes on, was discussed Wednesday night at the Town Council meeting. Before the proposal is accepted or denied, issues such as water lines, sewage pipes and roads need to be talked over, Mayor Lee Atwood said. He said the proposed amount of land is about the one-third the size of town right now. "As much as we hate to see the growth, we ought to be involved in the planning," Atwood said. Councilman Dave Anderson said growth is going to happen eventually and the town should "bite the bullet and do it right the first time." The planning and zoning commission is working on the town's master plan, which includes growth for the next 20 to 30 years and roads and water lines that will need to be kept up, said Atwood. Paul Danielson, owner of the 101.5 acres of land, questioned the council about the amount of time it would take to get the land annexed in to town, zoned and the final go-ahead approved. Danielson wants to start developing the land for homes as soon as possible. Atwood said he couldn't give an exact timeline as the town has never done anything like this before, but estimated the end of the summer. "If late summer is a realistic time period, then I can deal with that," Danielson said. In other business the council renewed the city's animal control contract with Jon Hester for $1,200. The fire department also reported to the council on its attempts to obtain a FEMA grant that would allow it to build a physical fitness center in the fire house, repair the roof and cover the cost of necessary shots for firefighters and EMT's.
