Cache Valley Mall expansion approved

By John Newbold

The Logan city planning commission approved a 54,000-square-foot food court expansion to the west side of the Cache Valley Mall.

Final plans are contingent on a $1.1 billion merger taking place this week between JP Realty and General Growth Properties, a Chicago-based real estate firm

Expansion to the mall should be completed and ready for the Christmas shopping season. A food court and up to 12 retail stores will be added when construction takes place sometime next month pending the merger, said Teri Routledge, administrative secretary for the director of development.

The mall's exterior will have a combination of light and dark tan E-I-F-S, cultured stone, and a large expanse of non-reflective glass. The glass will allow natural light into the food court area, with a metal trellis-type structure on the interior of the expansion helping to block direct sunlight according to the new design plan.

The sign on the west side of the mall will read "Cache Valley Mall," the mall logo, and a smaller-lettered "food court" above the entrance.

Although the expansion will remove many parking spaces on the west side of the mall, it will still be able to accommodate about 700 parking spaces. Parking and traffic will not be a problem because of the extension of 1250 North from Main to 200 East Street, and with the internal road leading from 1250 North to 1400 North.

General Growth Properties owns 141 regional malls nationwide and is one of the largest shopping center owners in the nation. Logan Mayor Doug Thompson hailed the merger because it will attract new tenants to come and start business in the new retail spaces.

The expansion will also be important to Logan City in hopes that it will cause local shoppers to stay in the valley and spend their money instead of traveling out of the valley to Salt Lake.
