Hyrum plans spring cleanup April 12 By
Shanna Nielsen HYRUM -- While most of us struggle to remove from our homes the dust and clutter that has accumulated almost as deep as the snow in Cache Valley, Hyrum will be taking on a citywide spring clean-up project. Beginning April 12, volunteers will band together in an effort to tidy up Hyrum and welcome the spring season. "There will be a special effort made to help people who have junk to get rid of and don't have a truck," Mayor Gordon M. Olson said. From hauling off unlicensed or broken down cars that sit on city property to gathering garbage and sprucing up residential yards, Hyrum is determined to sparkle by the time spring flowers begin to bloom. "Western Metals Recycling out of Ogden will help us with the cars," Councilman Larry Gittins said. "They'll take the cars off to crush and recycle them." Jeff Strahan from Western Metals Recycling helped with a pre-Olympic clean-up project in Ogden; he will attend the next City Council meeting Thursday to advise volunteers and leaders about what did and did not work well. Also attending the next meeting to address the details of the project will be Stan Young, chairman of Planning and Zoning. "We'd just like to encourage citizens to clean up and spruce up for spring," Gittins said.
