Twizzlers and laughs at Lewiston planning meeting

By Melanie Price

LEWISTON -- Lots of laughs, an opportunity to spend an evening with the neighbors and Twizzlers' black licorice made the monthly Planning and Zoning committee meeting the place to be at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Members passed around the licorice while last month's minutes were read, and then the meeting was under way. The first item on the agenda was swearing in Wayne Gibbs as the newest committee member.

"I bet you didn't know you got to be official," chairman Bruce Karren said to Gibbs.

The committee also addressed Tom and Cindy King, a couple applying for a single-family dwelling building permit. Member Karalee Morrison asked, "Can we walk through it anytime we want?"

Tom King said, "As long as you wear your Aggie sweatshirt."

Cindy King also said that they were intending to add a romp room, although she said she would never call it that in front of her kids.

The committee gave recommendation and Tom and Cindy Smith will appear before the City Council at its next meeting to get a permit.

The final item on the agenda was discussion of Gina Distefano's subdivision proposal.

Thom Smith said the committee still had concerns about sewer, water and parking. He added that lot size needed to be carefully considered. The lots need to be big enough for spaced-out homes but not so big that the lawns aren*t cared for, Smith said.

"It's not like you can have a goat on the property," Bruce Karren said.

"Unless you had it there before," Karalee Morrison added.

The committee instructed Distefano to address these issues and bring the information to the next meeting.

Aside from jokes about grandfather laws regarding goats, Julie Bergeson said the planning and zoning committee has to be very serious about some issues. The approval of last month's meeting minutes has to be "as accurate as a human can possibly make them" in case of future court action, she said.

The laughter died down around 9:40 p.m. when the group voted to adjourn the meeting.
