'Remember the Titans' worth a second look on video By
Debbie Lamb
In 1971 T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., football was the heart of the school, racism was at its peak as the school integrated blacks into classes and the football team. Remember the Titans, just released on video, is based on the true story of that town. Coach Herman Boone, (Denzel Washington) is transferred to the school to be the only black assistant coach. Before training starts, Boone is promoted over Coach Bill Yost (Will Patton) to become the head coach to please the school board's human rights activists. Tempers flare as white players refuse to play for Boone. Yost convinces his players to continue playing for the coach in order to go on to college. As training begins the team is split between the races. The team is brought closer together after a series of events starting with Coach Boone taking the players on a morning run to Gettysburg and explained to them, "Fifty thousand men died on this same field fighting the same battle we are still fighting today. . . . If we don't come together on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed." Teammates Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst) and Julius Campbell (Wood Harris) start out as rivals but develop a bond of friendship that sets the example for the rest of the team members. Boone is a rough but devoted coach, while Yost is the softer of the two. Between the two coaches the players learn valuable lessons of life and of football. This is a very inspirational movie for anyone, and one does not have to be a fan of football to enjoy it. Cheryl Yost, (Hayden Panettiere) Yost's 9-year old daughter, is added for comic relief. I would give this movie/video an A. It is captivating and inspiring. It is rated PG and was written by Gregory Allen Howard.
