Amalga to erect marker on site of 1841 camp By
Reuben Wadsworth
Amalga will soon add historical plaques to the town. A marker describing the trek of the Bidwell-Bartelson company will soon be erected on the spot in town where the group camped while on its way overland to California in 1841. Amalga mayor David Wood said in a City Council meeting Wednesday the plaque will be engraved atop a railroad tie marker and placed on the site in a ceremony to be in May or June. Other plaques may be placed in the town park if councilmen have their way. City Councilman Keith Hansen said he would like to install a monument inside the park that chronicles the story of the old sugar factory and other aspects of town history in connection with the addition to be built on the park bowery. Councilmen voted to submit a request to use restaurant tax money allotted to Cache Valley cities for municipal projects for a 25-by-22-foot extension to the parkıs pavilion. ³Everbody should have some share in it,² Wood said of the restaurant tax. Other minor improvements the council plans to make with the money include handicap access to the restrooms, the addition of more picnic tables and some way of fastening trash receptacles to the cement. The council also discussed starting a city justice court. The city holds its court in Newton under the direction of Judge Dennis Barker. ³Thereıs no use paying Newton $500 a month when we can do our own,² Wood said. The council approved a motion that renewed the interlocal agreement with Newton for the court, but said the plan in the future is to set up its own, which may take two years, Wood said. In other business, the council decided to hold the cityıs July 24 celebration on the actual day, Tuesday, instead of moving it to the weekend. April 7 was slated as the day for the city cleanup, during which time trash will be removed from along the townıs streets. Those wishing to help should meet at the Amalga City Building at 9 a.m. The same day as the cleanup, at 11 a.m., the dog clinic originally scheduled for March 10 will take place, at which time residentsı dogs can receive needed shots and get spayed or neutered.
