Wellsville crime rising, sheriff tells council

By Will Bettmann

WELLSVILLE -- Sheriff Lynn Nelson reported a rise in crime both in Wellsville and Cache County to the Wellsville City Council Wednesday night.

Nelson drew on statistics from the Cache County Sheriff's Office annual crime report, which he handed out to each member of the council.

Nelson said crime has been rising in Cache Valley for about a decade. In 1991, the Sheriff's Office received 4,217 calls for service, which are also known as "incidents investigated." In 1996, that number was 6,141, and in 2000, it was 8,813. Of those calls, 523 came from Wellsville in 2000.

"We saw a huge increase in drunk drivers last year. I don't know what to attribute that to. Maybe our officers are just doing a better job of being out in the community and catching them," said Nelson.

He said 645 traffic citations were issued in Wellsville in 2000, an increase of 22 percent from the previous year. He was accompanied by Lt. Kim Cheshire and Deputy David Peatross, who reports to the Wellsville City Council each month as part of the new Sheriff's Town and Area Representative (S.T.A.R.) program.

When asked by Nelson about the effectiveness of the S.T.A.R. program, Mayor Ruth Maughan said it was working well.

"We appreciate having the officers here giving us their monthly report," said Maughan. "It seems like the relationship between the council and the Sheriff's Office is better than it has been in a long time."
