South Fields' girls eligible for Miss Millville pageant By
Sharalyn Hartwell
MILLVILLE--The status quo will remain the policy for this year's Miss Millville pageant, said Mayor Gale Hall in yesterday's Millville City Council meeting. Girls who live in South Fields, an unincorporated area of Millville, are eligible to participate in the pageant, a forerunner to the Cache County Dairy Princess Pageant, Hall said. Seven pageant participants came with Sue Bentley, pageant director, and Susan Hancey, master of ceremonies for the pageant, to voice their concerns. "All I know is my gut feeling that if these girls are here and are a part of town -- keeping them out is not right," Hancey said. "They live within the community, they are a part of the community." Councilmember Duane Harvey and Hall both said they agreed, but that was not the matter being discussed. "I don"t want them left out, but that"s not the issue," Harvey said. "What is going to be voted on is a determination of the policy," Hall said. In the May 1 City Council meeting, after the pageant is over, the precise policy regarding the pageant, including a "more formalized process" for entering, will be discussed, Harvey said. A four or eight person committee will be established to oversee the pageant. The council also voted unanimously to budget $2500 to refurbish the Millville City parade float. The royalty from this year"s Miss Millville pageant will ride on it, Hall said. "We want to showcase these girls in the best way possible," he said. Other items of discussion included appointing Chad Kindred as member of the Board of Adjustment and putting four new recycling bins by city hall.
