Mortar Board honors -- and occasionally serenades -- Top Profs By
Jennifer Pinnock
Mortar Board honored 20 Utah State University professors Monday at its annual Top Prof Night in the Taggart Student Center Walnut Room. Each Mortar Board member has the opportunity to honor one professor who has been influential in his or her education. According to Jen Jolley, USU Mortar Board president, there are no strict criteria for choosing a professor. It can be any professor that a member has had throughout college. "It should be a professor that has touched the lives of the members -- the person who has affected them [members] most in their four years of college," Jolley said. Becca Madsen, Mortar Board member, said she chose Professor RoLayne Wilson because when Wilson asks, "What are you up to?" she really wants to know. Madsen said Wilson has a lot of energy in the classroom, and Madsen wanted to repay her for being such a great example. Madsen had the musical group Chorduroy serenade Wilson with the song Lida Rose from The Music Man. During the song all seven members of the singing group went down on bended knee and proposed to Wilson. "I felt like Juliet," said Wilson. "I've never had that many handsome men propose to me before." Wilson, a professor in the HPER department, said that she was thrilled to be chosen as top prof and said it was a great honor. She was also chosen as top prof in 1997. Other members said they chose professors because of the great examples they were and also because of the personal interest that they take in students' lives. Mortar Board is a National Honor Society for seniors dedicated to academic excellence and service to the community. Jolley said one service project Mortar Board organized this year was a book drive. The Mortar Board National office set the theme for the past year as Reading is Leading. The books collected were donated to libraries and needy families at Christmas time. Mortar Board will sponsor the second annual Guitars Unplugged music competition on March 20 in the TSC Ballroom where bands and solo artists will show their talent to the public. Admission is $2 and Mortar Board will use the funds for next year and other upcoming events. To be a Mortar Board member a student must be a senior in the top 15 percent of his or her class. Applications are available in the TSC 326 and will be taken until March 21.
