Proposed ordinance would place an 11 p.m. curfew on commercial lighting

By Wade Denniston

River Heights City Council scheduled a public hearing on an outdoor lighting ordinance for March 27. The proposed ordinance would place an 11 p.m. curfew on commercial lighting and require shielding on all lighting greater than 100 watts.

"This is a very progressive, forward-thinking ordinance," said Council Member Mike Jablonski as he presented the ordinance Tuesday night.

Jablonski cited lower energy costs and less light pollution as benefits of the proposal.

Noel Cooley, another council member, was concerned about safety issues with reduced lighting.

"I think we should be careful not to restrict lighting that should be there for safety reasons," he said.

Enforcement of the ordinance would be through building inspections and complaints from the residents of River Heights.

"I think other cities in Cache Valley are going to be interested in this," Jablonski said.
