Recreation proposal gets tempers hot at North Logan council meeting By
Holli Gunnell
NORTH LOGAN-- Emotions ran high as a proposal about joining North Logan's and Smithfield's youth recreational activities was discussed by the City Council last night. Elaine Nelson, city official for parks and recreation, was angered that she had not even been informed of the proposal before it was brought to discussion before the council. "I don't feel like North Logan is getting a good deal in this," she said. "North Logan can run the program . . . efficiently and for cheaper." No action was taken on the proposal, which would allow for three basketball seasons and use of the Smithfield Recreation Center. The idea was brought to the attention of the council by Jeff Jorgensen, city administrator and recorder. After discussion with Brett Daniels, recreation director for Smithfield, Jorgenson outlined the proposal. The proposal would also have North Logan paying Daniels and other recreational assistants and participants, with a total expenditure being $7,800. Nelson strongly opposed the proposal and wanted it thrown out by the council. She was in favor of having citizens participate in running the recreational programs for children. Mayor Jack Draxler said he wanted to keep the proposal as an idea, since no other ideas had been presented. He also referred to the failed programs North Logan relied has on in the past for the recreation of the children, which he referred to as "'Hook or Crook" methods" of getting people to participate. Gordon Younker, liaison to the planning and zoning commission, suggested that Nelson come up with alternative plans to present at the next meeting. Nelson agreed and said she will have a new plan when the council meets next.
