You've heard of garage bands; now meet Hambone, Logan's storage shed band

By Michael Hamblin

Every Sunday Jeff Hamula drives from Salt Lake City to a shed west of Logan. Usually these sheds are used for storage, but members of Hambone have turned it into their practice studio.

They brought in a light and nailed carpet to the walls and ceiling. With couches brought in it seemed more like a kids' treehouse than a place for a band to play.

The other members live in Logan, and all have either graduated or are still attending USU. Since being a rock star in Logan doesn't pay much, all band members have other jobs.

And since Logan doesn't have too many places to play live music, Hambone has been playing gigs in Ogden and Salt Lake City. The band also is working on its first album, which is almost completed. With a classic rock sound and a bit of funk, a lot of Hambone's shows turn into dance parties.

And when the band added a new guitarist, Shawn Herd, its live shows have sounded a lot better.

Drummer Brian Fox has played for numerous bands, including Model Citizen. He graduated in music at Utah State University and has been working on getting a contractor's license.

Bassist Jeff Erickson is still attending USU, and so is Herd. When lead singer Hamula graduated, he moved back to Salt Lake, which has made his practice sessions a long commute.

In the end, the band members may not be the next Red Hot Chili Peppers, but they enjoy what they're doing and realize they can't be in it for the money.

Especially in Logan.
