Riverside residents choose county delegates at Republican caucus

By Emily W. Jensen

Seventeen people sat in a circle at Box Elder County Commissioner Lee Allen's house as the Riverside/East Garland Republican Caucus began Monday.

On the agenda was the electing of six county delegates and one state delegate to represent Riverside and East Garland in the upcoming county and state primaries. A new chairman and vice-chairman would also be elected to run the Riverside/East Garland meetings for the next two years.

"This is the only place you really get a say in government," said Eleanor Jensen, a resident of Riverside.

District Chairman Vaughn Rhodes conducted the meeting, and after a prayer, the pledge and reading the Republican platform, he asked for nominations for chairman.

Riverside resident Frank Nishigushi sat quietly with his wife Fumike. He gave a surprised look as he was nominated and seconded.

No one else was nominated and the voting process began. In favor "ayes" greeted Nishigushi's new chairmanship.

The seat of vice chairman took longer as Eleanor Jensen, Carol Rhodes and Tricia Brown were all nominated.

Blaine Rhodes seconded two of the nominations. His wife Rhea nudged him in the ribs. "You can't second for two," she said.

"What! I did? Well, you gotta go faster because my memory is bad," he said.

On the other side of the room, Eleanor Jensen's sons Robin Jr. and Tom sat together.

Just 17 and not knowing what to do because his mother was nominated, Tom whispered to his brother, "Who should I vote for?"

"This is a democracy," said Robin Jr., exasperated, "vote for who you want to."

Robin Jensen Sr. turned back to his sons, "So, who are we going to vote for? We have to decide if we want to ever eat again."

The votes were collected and Tricia Brown was made vice-chairman.

The meeting concluded with the nominating of the six county delegates and the nominating of the one state delegate.

Robin Jr. said, " I nominate mom."

Rhea Rhodes exclaimed, "I second mom."

And along with Eleanor Jensen being nominated, Robin Jensen Sr., Robin Jensen Jr., Valoise Sorenson, Tricia Brown, and Frank Nishigushi, were all nominated and agreed to be the county delegates.

Bernice Allen was chosen as the state delegate after promising to vote for her husband, Lee Allen.

"Hey, I have to live with him," she said.
