During the month of March Utah State University has sponsored many events honoring women. This is in response to a proclamation by President Clinton who declared March 2000 as Women's History Month.

Clinton said, "Women's History Month is about highlighting the extraordinary achievements of women throughout our history, while recognizing the equally significant obstacles they had to overcome along the road to success."

An interest in celebrating women's history began in 1978 when the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women in California, initiated a "Women's History Week." This idea was greeted with enthusiasm and soon several school districts started celebrating Women's History Week.

Three years later a Congressional Resolution, co-sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Barbara Mikulski, declared a National Women's History Week. Finally in1987, the National Women's History Project petitioned Congress to expand the national celebration to the entire month of March.

President Clinton encouraged all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities, and to remember the many contributions of courageous women who have made this Nation strong.

He said, "we must rededicate ourselves to forging a society in which gender no longer predetermines a person's opportunities or station in life."

In the last weeks of March, USU is sponsoring several lectures and events that are free to the public.

At 12 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, in the Science and Technology Library, room 120, Dr. Fran Titchner, a history professor at USU, will be giving a presentation about the contributions of women in ancient times entitled, "Nobody's Old Ladies: Some Ancient Women."

On March 27 at 7 p.m. in the TSC Ballroom, The USU Women's Center Advisory Board will honor Carol Funk, Bonnie Nielson, Loye Painter, Janice Pearce, and Sarah Skanchy for their personal achievements and outstanding contributions to the advancement and equality of life for women.

On March 28 at 12:30 p.m. in the USU Eccles Conference Center Auditorium, Dr. JoAnn Valenti, a founding member of the Society of Environmental Journalists, will discuss the role of women in environmental journalism.
