HYDE PARK -- The City Council unanimously approved rezoning for a subdivision at 100 West and 300 South streets despite residents' concerns stated Tuesday night.

"There is already too much traffic on the road," said Kathy Downs of Hyde Park. "What are you going to do? You can build a bigger road but more traffic will come."

The request was that the 13.08 acres on the west side of 100 West be rezoned to accommodate a new housing subdivision.

"I understand that the road could potentially be a problem," said Nate Reeve, the representative for Su Vall Homes. "Over time hopefully we can make the road a safer place."

City officials have met many times with planning and zoning commissioners and have full support from Curt Gordon, the city administrator and Jim Skidmore, the chairman of planning and zoning, said Frank Ashcroft, a council member. The proposal would double the road's width to 80 feet, Ashcroft said.

"What good's a block going to do with the traffic on the road," Downs said. "We are going to have a fatality if the traffic isn't slowed down somehow. The police call the road the Indy 500. We give John [Italisano, a patrol officer] punch and cookies to patrol the road."

North Park Police regularly patrol at 100 West and 300 South., said Mayor Mark Daines.

Asked if he fills a quota of tickets there, North Park police Cpl. Italisano answered, "Yes, that is my regular stopping place. But I never have received punch and cookies."
