Ice arena should meet city standards, Hyde Park council members say

By Debbie Lamb

HYDE PARK -- The City Council motioned Tuesday night to suggest to the county that the Bridgerland Ice Arena be built to comply with Hyde Park's ordinances, though the arena is not yet in city boundaries.

Right now the arena is located on county property, said Stanley Kane, the consultant and architect for the arena. After the annexation, the property will be located in Hyde Park, Kane said.

"We recommend that this ice arena as drawn meets our ordinances with the stipulation that the north half of the lot is paved," said Sara Krebs, a Planning and Zoning member. "We also recommend that we talk to the school district about sharing the parking lot."

In the city ordinance chapter 7-13-14 it states that there must be one parking space per 200 feet. The arena is 57,000 square feet, meaning there should be 270 parking spaces. Even if 2,000 fans carpooled with an average of three people per car, there would still be a need for more than 600 parking stalls.

"We could meet your city requirements easily with half a parking lot," said Kane. "But we want to be good neighbors and give everyone a space to park in the lot."

The next high school for Cache Valley will be next to the arena at 300 N. 400 E. St. It was discussed to see if there would be some way to incorporate the parking lot to fit the need of the high school and arena.

"My concern is a big sea of parking that isn't used 80 percent of the time," said Curt Gordon, city administrator.
