Is it a fighting style or a dance? Yes

By Steve Day

The martial arts have become much more than the fighting and self-defense we see at the movies or play in video games. Today the martial arts are practiced in aerobics, used as therapy, and for many their cultural identity.

In Logan you can practice the same martial art that Wesley Snipes uses in many of his movies. It's a Brazilian art called Capoeira, which mixes fighting techniques with aerobatics, dance and music.

The Logan Capoeira group offers classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Logan Recreation Center, next to Logan High School. Classes are not age group specific. Anyone, any age can participate. For those that are interested in trying it out, or just want to see what Capoeira is all about, a free class is offered.

You should wear clothes that are comfortable to work out in, such as sweats and a T-shirt.

"Capoeira combines music, dance, singing, and martial arts to make for a very unique and fun martial art. Many people ask "Wel . . . is it a fighting style or is it a dance?" The answer is 'Yes!' Capoeira incorporates the ability for both. Personally, I don't teach it as 'self-defense', but the conditioning and training for moves no doubt enables you to do things you may have not done before," says Jason White, Logan Capoeira instructor.

Class starts with warm-ups and moves on to a review of movements you will learn. Since Capoeira is practiced with music you will learn to play instruments and sing songs. Time will also be taken to focus attention on those who are just beginning.

The Logan Capoeira group is affiliated with Capuraginga, a large Capoeira group. Logan as well as groups from BYU and Ogden are the first affiliated schools of Capuraginga in the United States.

Class Times: Tuesdays 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Thursdays 8 to 9:30 p.m.

Class Fee: $30/month for public, $20/month for USU students
