One of Utah's best-kept secrets

By Shawn Wolfley

Logan River Golf Course is not the longest course in the state, but it is one of the tightest. There is water on every hole on the course except for five holes. Those holes include 2, 8, 9, 10 and 14. This course is a target course. If you are good with your woods, you can use them, but it is mostly an iron course.

The first notable thing about Logan River is the price. For one to play 18 holes with a cart and to get to see some of the most beautiful scenery around only costs $28.50 per player and walking is only $19. To play nine holes with a cart would cost $15.50 and to walk would cost $10.

The pro-shop is fully stocked with everything you would need.

The golf course rating and slope from the gold tees is 70.5/124, from the blue/white tees is 68.3/119 and from the red tees is 68.9/117. What this means is how the course is rated, the higher the number the harder the course. So if you were to see a course that is 75.3/136 that course would be a pretty difficult course. I know that not everyone knows everything about golf and all the rules, but I wanted to give a little insight to people so you will know.

I am going to tell you about golf course etiquette. If you are going to play a course that you have never played before, it would be a good idea to call ahead of time and ask some simple questions. What is your dress code, are you a soft spike facility, are we required to ride, what are the prices, do we have to play 18 holes? Those are just some of the questions you could ask so you know before hand.

There are a lot of rules to golf and I don't know everyone of them. I am not saying that in order to play the game you need to know all the rules but you should know some of the simple ones. One is to know the etiquette of golf.

First and foremost is the safety of others as well as yourself. This means that if I were to hit my ball I need to make sure that the other players that I am playing with are directly behind me. If the ball should go in a direction that I did not intend for it to go and it is traveling toward someone else on the course I should have the common sense to yell fore. That lets players that are all around you that a ball is coming in their direction and should take cover.

Consideration for other players, the player who has the honor should be allowed to play before his/her opponent. The player who has the lowest score on a hole will have the honor for the next hole and soon. No one should talk, move or stand close to or directly behind the ball or the hole when a player is addressing his/her ball.

The players pace of play are in the interest of all players. If everyone were to play 18 holes it should not take more than four hours to play. If you believe that you have lost your ball, in order to save time, hit a provisional ball.

Do not spend more than five minutes looking for a ball; move on -- it is just a ball, and you can buy more. If you are playing with some friends and are moving very slowly, then let the group or groups behind you play through. Don't argue with course marshals; they do their best to speed up play and move things along. If a marshal does come up and asks you to speed up, do it!

If you happen to land in a bunker (sand trap) make sure that you rake it as smooth as possible. Taking practice swings in a bunker is fine as long as you are swinging only air. What I mean is that if you take a practice swing in the sand and hit some sand that is a one-stroke penalty. If you don't want to count all your strokes that is fine too, but make sure you always rake the bunkers. Make the bunkers look twice as good as what they did before you arrived.

Replacing divots in the fairways is another little thing that can be done. If you take a divot in a fairway or in the rough, fix it! That great big pelt that you just hit -- go and get it and put it back in the grater or hole and lay it down and gently step on it. Then you won't bitch when you land in one and have to hit out of it, because the person before didn't replace his/hers.

Remember to always repair the ball marks on the greens. Fix yours as well as three more. Know how to fix it the proper way. Always work around the ball mark, lift and turn the grass so it can grow back the proper way.

Players should always make sure that if you are walking that you never put down your bag on the greens and all electric carts should stay on cart paths when they are available. Electric carts should always stay at least 30 feet from the greens. Quit being so lazy and park the carts away from the greens and walk.

I promise it won't kill you to walk a little. Pull carts should never go across greens and all pull carts and electric carts should never go in sand traps, ponds etc.

If you ever have any questions about rules or what is and what is not allowed on golf courses, just ask. The people that work in the pro shop are more than willing to help out in any way that they can.

If there are certain rules or things about dress codes that you do not agree with that is fine, but the rules have been set in stone for a long time and if you do not like the dress code than go and play somewhere else. If the dress code is shirts with sleeves or it says that you have to wear a collard shirt then put one on.

They're a lot of things in life that I don't like, but if those are the rules and guide lines that I must follow so should you. Make golf fun for everyone and it will be fun for you.
