Cannon, fireworks, and traffic make a noisy July 24 celebration at Weber State By

OGDEN -- Weber State University welcomed Pioneers Day with cannon Sunday. The university's annual fireworks are always on the Sunday before Pioneer Day, July 24, which Utah uses as a state holiday to commemorate the day in 1847 when Mormon settlers reached the Great Salt Lake. The fireworks have always been a great place to go and hang out with your family or friends. They are held on the campus of Weber State, which provides an excellent backdrop. Duck ponds reflect the glimmering lights of the fireworks, and the mountains add to a perfect setup. Sunday's feature was the New American Symphony Orchestra, which combined with cannon explosions and fiery blasts in the sky. The orchestra was set up on the duck pond with loudspeakers for most to hear. This event has gotten so popular that people go up ahead of time and stake claim on places to watch the show. Blankets, couches, orange street cones -- everything you could think of at the time was used to try to make sure your spot wouldn't get taken. Even parking spaces were on reserve, as 70,000 people were expected to attend, so you can only imagine the spotted areas of grass that would be left showing. The fireworks were a success. The only troubling thing was the traffic getting home.
