Festival of the American West returns

By Maggon Osmond

The 29th annual eight-day Festival of the American West will be Friday through Aug. 5 at the American West Heritage Center in Wellsville.

The Festival of the American West is the largest event held at the American West Heritage Center. The festival is known for its authentic preservation of our Western Heritage and is held in Cache Valley because of its historic use as a rendezvous spot for mountain men. The festival features a Native American village, mountain men rendezvous, military encampment, pioneer settlement, heritage craft demonstrators, cowboy shoot-out, medicine show, entertainment, and lots of food.

The opening event will be a concert at 8 p.m. Friday by nationally known Western recording artist Don Edwards, cowboy poet Waddie Mitchel, and the Sons of the San Joaquin.

An American West Art Show will be open in the Livery Stable, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., during the entire eight days of the Festival. The art show will be featuring Cowboy Hall of Fame artist Jim Norton and several other noted artists from Utah. An American Heritage Quilt Show will also run the entire eight days of the festival, 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. The quilts will be on display at the Wellsville Tabernacle on 75 South 100 East.

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., will be a cowboy poetry gathering. Nationally recognized cowboy poets and musicians from the Western United States will gather to show off their talents. Also on Saturday there will be a Western Horse Parade at 9 a.m., featuring beautiful horses and historic horse-drawn equipment.

On Aug. 5, teams from across the nation compete in a Dutch oven cook-out. After judging is complete visitors can sample the Dutch oven cooking.

The festival will end each night of its celebration with an outdoor pageant. The pageant is a story of the settling of the American West. The pageant features horse-drawn wagons, life-size locomotives, hundreds of dancers and performers and fireworks. It is suggested to bring a jacket, blanket or lawn chair.
