Aggie basketball team to play in Alaska tournament By
the USU athletic media relations office
USU's head basketball coach Stew Morrill announced this week the 2000-2001 basketball schedule for the defending Big West champions. "Our schedule certainly presents challenges and opportunities that a veteran team will be excited about," Morrill said. "As a coach, you are always concerned about your team's ability to meet these challenges." USU will play 31 games, including two exhibitions, 13 non-conference games, and 16 games in conference. Unlike previous years in the Big West, this season's league schedule is a round-robin, with each team playing each other conference member both home and away. The departure of Nevada to the Western Athletic Conference and New Mexico State and North Texas to the Sun Belt leaves nine teams competing in basketball in the Big West. The Aggies will participate in the Top of the World Tournament in Fairbanks, Alaska, from Nov. 16 to Nov. 18. Other teams in the tourney are Auburn, Colorado, South Florida, Santa Clara, Davidson, Austin Peay and Alaska-Fairbanks. Non-conference games include Weber State and Utah at home, and Brigham Young University on the road. The Aggies also will host Cornell, Albany and Air Force in the Gossner Foods Classic, Dec. 29-30 at the Smith Spectrum. The first exhibition game will be Nov. 4 against Global Sports. The 2001 Big West Tournament will be March 8-10 in Anaheim, Calif. The NCAA Tournament will begin March 15.
