Cache Valley Cruise In brings in the old as well as the new By

Mike Godfrey and his 2000 Dodge Prowler. / Photo by Heather Campbell Unique to Logan, this event is one of the most popular throughout the state as hot rod cars make their way into the city for the annual Cache Cruise-In. The event began in 1943 with only about 45 cars on display. Later, as popularity grew and cars from all over the world joined in, the gathering became an annual event. The Cruise-In began Friday night and continued throughout the weekend. Cars were set up on the fairgrounds and while some might not have expected too many participants in it's beginning hours, they were surprised to see the gates open to a continuous crowd of people. With more variety than ever this year's event featured hot rods of all types and sizes with everything from an old police car, to a very fancy hearse. Also featured in the show were a couple of Army jeeps, some of which were used in the Korean War and World War I. The jeeps were somewhat of a "people's favorite," as passers-by stopped to admire a vehicle that many had only seen in the movies. While the event featured mainly old cars, Mike Godfrey's 2000 Dodge Prowler had visitors goggling over its features and it's price. The black Prowler is said to be able to go from 0 to 60 in 6 seconds. Godfrey said he was surprised he got so much attention as his car was basically right off the lot. In fact he said, "One guy set up a beautifully restored car out here and I was admiring all the work he put into that, but my car has been getting a lot of attention and finally I think the guy got a little upset because later he moved to the other side of the park." Godfrey bought his 2000 model in December for about $44,700. But Godfrey said the dealers were buying the cars and selling them for around $75,000 and making a good profit off of them. "So," Godfrey said, "the new 2001 is just coming out and Dodge decided if the dealers could sell it for that much then they could too." That means for those of you interested in picking up a 2001 model of the Prowler, you had better have extra deep pockets as these things are going to sell for at least $70,000, according to Godfrey. Race cars were another hot item at the Cruise-In. According to the racers, their cars were unique not only for speed but also the fuel used, which usually consisted of alcohol or nitro, or a combination of the two. But the most shocking to people, the racers said, was the loudness of the engine. One said, "If we lit up in the park here we'd have about a hundred people come running to complain as everyone in the park would hear it." While official results are not out yet, this year's Cruise-In was said to have had more than 600 entrants. With food, ice-cream, contests and even a free car giveaway, everyone seemed to have a good time. As for the cars they moved throughout the valley and over to Bear Lake on Friday where they had a dutch oven-dinner with the other participants and the event concluded Saturday night with a parade through main street in Logan.
