Crossing guard, flashing school zone sign to grace Lewiston intersection
By Aaron Morton
LEWISTON--Wednesday night the Lewiston City Council approved a contract for the Utah Department of Transportation for a flashing reduced speed school zone signs at State Route 61 and Main Street. Currently many parents are forced to drive their children to school rather than risk the crossing of the street, the council said. The contract requires a crossing guard present for two half-hour periods when Lewiston Elementary students cross the street. The cost would be $10 a day to pay the crossing guard, or $800 for the rest of the fiscal year. The signs will be put up as soon as UDOT gets Lewiston's approval, Mayor Russell Hirst said. The council voted for the measure, stipulating that they would use existing funds from another department until June, when the city would build it into its new budget. "We'll take it out of roads," Hirst said, "or wherever we can find it." Newly elected councilmen Brooks Tarbat and Jeff Hall started their terms with some confusion and some ribbing from fellow council members as well as themselves. "I don't have any idea what I'm doing here," Tarbatjoked while reporting about bids for a new city truck to replace a run-down one. Both farmers, Tarbat has aleady served one term, while it was Hall's first time sitting at the table. They replaced council members Kent Buttars and Paul Dent.
