River Heights rejects tax on cell phones

By Matthew Flitton

RIVER HEIGHTS -- In an unanimous decision, the River Heights City Council decided against passing a cell phone tax Tuesday night.

Council member Mike Jablonski expressed the feelings of all concerned when he said the $1 tax on residents who use cell phones wasn't fair since the city didn't provide the cell phone service.

"We're not in the cell phone business," he said.

The ordinance was considered at the request of the Utah League of cities and towns, which has urged towns across the state to consider implementing the tax.

In Cache Valley, only Millville has approved a tax on cellular phones for its residents.

In other business, the council deferred voting on a decision to rent a vacant school to the Utah Festival Opera Company pending information on what improvements the group is willing to make to the building.

If approved, the opera company would store costumes and scenery for the summer festival in the vacant building on the corner of 500 East and 500 South. It would also house a special musical collection from the career of opera singer Mariska Aldrich.
