Aggie big-men show size matters

The Utah State University basketball team proved Saturday night that size does matter, as it defeated Boise State University 82-64 in the Spectrum.

USU took a 37-35 lead into the locker room at halftime, thanks in large part to the inside play of big-men Dimitri Jorssen and Shawn Daniels.

Jorssen and Daniels each scored eight first-half points, and Daniels finished the half with five rebounds and a blocked shot.

Just how dominating were the Aggie big men?

USU shot 58 percent from the field in the first half, nailing 15 of 26 shots. The Aggies made 11 shots inside the key; Jorssen and Daniels accounted for eight of those 11 baskets with some spectacular post play.

By comparison, Boise State made 14 first-half shots -- just four of which came inside the key. However, the Broncos managed to keep the game close by nailing six first-half 3-pointers.

USU's physical, inside play seemed to wear on the Broncos, leaving them a step slow on defense. While Daniels and Jorssen's numbers may not have been quite as big in the second half (Daniels scored just four points), the defensive attention they drew may have been even more valuable than the points they scored.

As Boise State defenders concentrated on closing down the middle, it left the perimeter open for guards Tony Brown and Bernard Rock, who finished the game with 17 and 16 points respectively.

Rock scored all 16 of his points in the second half, taking advantage of a slower BSU defense. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second half, and finished the game 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point line.

Brown scored eight second-half points. It was the 10th time this year he's reached double-figures in scoring.

Rock also reached double-figures for the 10th time this season, while Jorssen reached the plateau for the ninth time and Daniels reached it for the 11th time.
