7-footer's driving layup against BSU will last Morrill for at least 10 games By
Reuben Wadsworth
Utah State head coach Stew Morrill was surprised. Boise State defenders were surprised. Even USU center Dimitri Jorssen was surprised, and he was the one who made the play. Taking about two dribbles, Jorssen penetrated and scored a driving layup with 6:54 to go in Saturday night's game at the Spectrum to put his Aggies up 66-55 in an eventual 82-64 USU win. A driving layup is not something out of the ordinary -- for a point guard. But Jorssen is a 7-foot center. Seven-footers don't drive to the basket night in and night out. So, why exactly did Jorssen see a green light all the way to the basket? Saying his defender went for the steal and failed, Jorssen, seeing his man "already beat," decided to scoot past his man and take it to the hole. Jorssen's long strides helped him reach the rim in a hurry if you ask him. "I think I took about two steps to get to the hoop from the three-point line," Jorssen said with a smirk on his face. Was the play designed? "Absolutely not," Jorssen admitted. Even though it was successful, Morrill won't be adding it to the playbook anytime soon. "I don't need to see that play for another 10 games," Morrill said. Success on the play was bliss, as Jorssen was nervous about its outcome. "I just hoped I made it, or they were going to take me out," he said. Fittingly, the play was Jorssen's last bucket of a 15-point performance, his highest scoring game of the Big West Conference season. If Jorssen stays on Morrill's schedule, USU fans will see another driving layup from the team's tallest player when UC Santa Barbara comes to town March 1.
