Aggie conference streak stretches to 21 with comeback slamming of Idaho

By Doug Layne

Last year the USU basketball team was known for its slow starts and fantastic finishes throughout the season. Against the University of Idaho on Saturday night, it seemed as if last year's team was playing against the Vandals.

Until the second half, that is, when the Aggies erased a six-point deficit to win 80-58.

In the first half of play, it looked as if the USU 20-game winning streak would be coming to an end as the Ags turned the ball over 15 times.

"We couldn't take care of the ball," Dimitri Jorssen said afterward.

In the first half, the Aggies shot only 31 percent from the field. USU would also see itself down by as many as 10 points but pull it with in six to end the half.

"The first half we were awful, and you got to give Idaho credit," Coach Stew Morrill told the news media after the game. "We were lazy in the first half. We weren't aggressive. That was not our basketball team"

Luckily for Utah State that there are two halves in a game and they came right back to tie the score quickly when Curtis Bobb hit a jumper. Then the Aggies would take the lead for good as Tony Brown nailed a three pointer from downtown.

"They didn't have any answers for him [Brown]," Jorssen said.

Brown would finish the game with 23 points, which was a season best. Brown came up big for the USU as he hit three of his baskets from beyond the arc.

"He was aggressive off the dribble, he got it going" Coach Morrill said to the press.

The Vandals just had no answer for USU in the second half. The Aggies who just managed to score only 27 points in the first half would score 21 in the first eight minutes.

"Once you play hard things roll for the team," Jorssen said.

In the second half USU would end up scoring 53 points in the second half and only allowed the U of I 25 points. The Aggies would also finish the game shooting 58 percent.

Each of the Aggie starters would finish the game in double figures, including Jorssen who had a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

The Aggies now have a 21 game conference winning streak and they will try to make it 22 as they face Long Beach on Thursday night.
