Blistering 62 percent from field in first half paces Aggies past Irvine

The Utah State Aggies improved their record to 11-5 and remain perfect in the Big West as they defeated Cal State Irvine, 81-46, Saturday in the Spectrum. Once again Troy Rolle led the Aggies with 18 points. The whole team played tough, as the Aggies shot 15-24, for 62 percent, their best performance in a half all season. The Aggies ended up shooting 55 percent for the whole game. The only downfall of the game was Tony Brown who missed his first foul shot after making his first 25. In the first half the Aggies used a 16-8 run to take control of the game. During the run USU only allowed the Anteaters to hit one shot from the field in the last eight minutes beore halftime. At the beginning of the second half, UCI cut the lead to 10 with a quick three but that was about the closest they would come after a couple of quick Aggie baskets including a Brown three-pointer. During the second half the Aggie defense stepped up the pressure as they allowed UCI to shoot 7-22 from the field and get only one offensive rebound. Midway throught the second half, the Aggies were able to produce a five-point point play. It started with a three-point basket, during which another Aggie was fouled underneath the basket. During the last 10 minutes the Anteaters once again made only two baskets from the field. Every player from USU got to play the Aggies enjoyed their biggest lead of the game when Brad Wilden made a layup to put the Aggies up 79-42. With the win over Cal State Irvine, Utah State now leads the series 23-22. That win gives the Aggies a winning record against every team in the Big West Conference. The Aggies will be on the road for the next couple of weeks as they
travel to play UC Santa Barbara on Jan 20. Game time will be at 8 p.m.
The Aggies will look to win their first game on the road since Jan 21,
1999, at Boise when they won 58-52. |
