USU Gymnasts triumph at home
By Wade Denniston
The Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at Utah State University is buzzing with an excitement that Women's Gymnastics Coach Ray Corn says he has never seen paralleled in his 21 years at USU, according to a 1999 media guide.
Friday, the 23rd ranked Aggies showed 2,385 fans in attendance at the Spectrum that excitement Corn was talking about.
With Christy Denson leading the way, the Aggies defeated Southern Utah University at their first meet, and Sacramento State University who had previously beaten Cal State, Fullerton.
In their first meet of the season, the Aggies seemed to look Denson's way when teammate Krissy Richards injured herself on her dismount from the uneven bars. Although she walked off under her own power, Richards didn't compete the rest of the night.
Through the rest of the meet, Denson showed why she was USU's top all-arounder last season. She scored a 9.675 on the vault, 9.85 on the uneven bars, 9.80 on the beam, and 9.80 on the floor for an all-around score of 39.125 to earn the meet's all-around champion title.
In addition, Denson received the outstanding gymnast award presented by Coca-Cola of Logan.
One young fan had her sights set on Denson's awards.
"I wish I was that girl who won," she said.
