Success is sweet for Aggie gymnasts
By Wade Denniston
Before the 1999 season began for the lady gymnasts of Utah State, head coach Ray Corn predicted Christy Denson would be fun to watch.
Denson proved her coach right on Friday night as she helped lead the 23rd ranked Aggies over the University of California Golden Bears 192.95 to 180.425.
With an all-around score of 39.175, which ties her personal best, Denson was presented the all-around gymnast award for the second week in a row.
Also for the second week in a row, Coca-Cola of Logan presented Denson with the outstanding gymnast award.
With scores of 9.6 on the vault, 9.85 on the uneven bars, 9.875 on the balance beam, and 9.85 on the floor, Denson propelled the Aggies to 3-0 on the young season.
Krissy Richards came back from her injury last week to score 9.825 on the beam and 9.675 on the floor.
The Bears came into Logan with a 2-1 record after a tough loss to nationally ranked Stanford last week 193.775 to 188.350.
This was the first time Cal has ventured into Logan since Jan. 25,1986, when the Aggies claimed a slim victory 178.45 to 178.15.
The Aggies will hit the road for their next four meets beginning Saturday, Feb. 6, at Boise State University, where they will also face the University of Washington.
Utah State has an all-time record of 35-3 against Boise St. and an 8-8 record against Washington.
The Aggies return home to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Friday Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. to face the University of Utah and Boise State.
