Teens
arrested on truancy counts

Feburary 27, 2009 | LOGAN -- Two juveniles were arrested
on suspicion of truancy and possession of alcohol at
Canyon Road and Crockett Avenue yesterday. Police also
found the pair had weapons in their possession.
The teens had alcohol, brass knuckles and three large
knives, said Lt. Rod Peterson of the Logan Police Department.
"Officer Gurr saw them at a time when they should
have been at school," said Capt. Jeff Curtis of the
LCPD. "He turned around, talked to them, and found they
should be at school. They made some excuses, but the
officer called and found they wore not valid."
The youths wore booked for truancy and possession
of alcohol, said Peterson.
"He had a reason why he had the knives," said Curtis.
The police confiscated the items until their parents
come pick these up. "They didn’t arrest them on these
[weapons] charges."
Gurr also stopped a third individual, not named by
police officials, who was with the two minors at the
time. He was released because he was over 18 years of
age.
"It doesn’t look like it is gang related," said Curtis.
"Just some kids that wore sloughing school and got caught."
“They are not going home teaching, let's say that,”
said Peterson when asked if this incident was gang related.
Peterson did not say that this was gang activity;
however, he thought it suspicious that the youth had
brass knuckles and knives. “I’m going to let the public
decide that.”
Gang activity in Logan "is developing," said Curtis.
"But it is not at a major level like what they are seeing
at the Wasatch Front. So far, we have been able to keep
on top of it.
“We have an investigator that works strictly with
investigation that deal with gangs,” said Curtis, about
LCPD’s response for increasing gang activity in Logan.
“We have a good group of people that are trying to keep
on top of what is going on.”
Logan officials do a good job at cleaning up graffiti
as soon as it is up, said Curtis, and this may be one
thing that is discouraging gang activity in he city.
“Any time anybody sees anything taking place that
is gang related,” said Curtis, “it certainly helps us
that they could call so we can respond to those activities.
