Hyrum planning commission picks Sproul as new chairman

February 16, 2009 | HYRUM -- There was a change in leadership at Thursday's meeting of the Hyrum City Planning Commission.

Steven Sproul was elected as the new planning commission chairman. He replaces Brent Roylance. Jeff Nielsen was nominated and approved as vice chairman. Nielsen replaces former vice chairman Sproul.

"Job well done by chairman and vice chairman," said Commissioner Scott Allgood to Roylance and Sproul.

"It has been kind of fun," said Roylance about his service as chairman. The planning commission will continue to meet the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

In a review of 2008 work, there were many businesses that obtained building permits in Hyrum last year. Some of those included Edward Jones Investments and Utah Carzz. Several subdivisions and homes were also approved by the commission last year. In total, there were 24 building permits issued in the year 2008, according to Zoning Administrator Ron Salvesen.

There have been 12 building permits issued so far this year with four more to be issued within a week, said Salvesen.

Envision Utah, a non-government agency formed to help guide the development of Utah, will hold a workshop March 4 at the Hyrum Civic Center. According to Roylance, Envision Utah wants to see a general plan for the valley. Commissioner Dave Bennett said Envision Utah has held similar workshops in Salt Lake and gathered statistics and feedback from the community. He said the group took the information to government organizations and presented their findings based on how citizens envisioned the growth of their cities.

Roylance said the Envision Utah predicts Cache Valley will double in 30 years.
